Eat More Weigh Less

February 20th, 2009

Surprisingly, the component of foods that has the biggest impact on how much food you eat is water. Water adds weight and volume to foods without adding calories — it lowers the calorie density of foods. Water-rich foods include vegetables, fruits and soups. -msnbc.com

MY COMMENT: Barbara Rolls, Ph. D. has been studying this for years.

My Muscles are Confused Enough

January 25th, 2009

Looking to add muscle and create definition like those appealing ads that feature sensational before and after photos? Don’t think you can do it in just 90 days.

“To make a change in how you look, you are talking about a significant period of training,” Dr. Kraemer said. “In our studies it takes six months to a year.” And, he added, that is with regular strength-training workouts, using the appropriate weights and with a carefully designed individualized program. “That is what the reality is,” he said. -Fitness Isn’t an Overnight Sensation

Andy Reid Needs Help

January 13th, 2009
Cleveland Browns v Philadelphia Eagles

Congratulations to Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles for making it all the way to the NFC Championship game. No doubt Reid is a great coach, but he still could use some help- with his weight.

I worry that Reid will soon end up just like Rick Majerius, another coach with Wisconsin ties who ended up with heart problems when his weight ballooned to a reported 370 pounds while coaching Utah.

Coaching is stressful. Coaches probably are sleep deprived. Coaches probably don’t always get to eat nutritious foods or have the time to exercise.

Players are fined for not maintaining weight standards- why not coaches?

Post Workout Recovery Meal Questioned

November 16th, 2008

Elite athletes are advised to “fill the tank” with an energy bar or sports drink soon after a workout. washington post

But for mere mortals — folks who are simply trying to keep their weight in check or stave off heart disease — adding calories right after burning them up could negate the benefits of the sweat, researchers say.

MY COMMENTS: I am a little skeptical of this advice- I am not convinced that calories in and out are the only answer to weight loss- I believe developing fat burning enzymes in the muscle are more important, and the only way to do that is through physical activity- turns out recovery following workouts is delayed when you don’t eat. I’d rather see people focus on fitness rather than calories.
