Calcium / Weight Loss Connection

June 17th, 2009
Adding Milk to Mixing Bowl

“An increased dairy calcium intake of 1241 mg day-1 increased faecal fat excretion by 5.2 g day-1 compared with low-calcium (less than 700 mg day-1) dairy diet,” -nutraingredients

MY COMMENT: If your intake of calcium is low and you are fighting a weight problem, it might not be a bad idea to boost your intake. 5 grams of fat excreted per day amounts to about 45 calories, or 4-5 pounds in a year, so don’t expect miracles.

What Americans Really Want- More Fat!

May 17th, 2009

cover-feb-full-iti

Good article here on America’s demand for bigger, fatter burgers.

“What people say they want and what they do don’t match up,” says Darren Tristano, an executive vice president at Technomic, a food-industry research and consulting firm. “If they say, ‘I’m gonna order more salads,’ they’re going to order more french fries.”

Wendy’s spokesman Denny Lynch says research shows that customers had an unslakable yearning for more bacon. “Well, if they like two strips of bacon, would they like three? And if they like three, how about six? And that’s where the Baconator came from,” he says

note: The Baconator has 1,920 mg of sodium, 830 calories, and 51 grams of fat.

Are All Calories Created Equal?

March 27th, 2009

Research indicates that not all calories are created equal. It take more energy to metabolize calories from protein vs carbohydrate. Also, the addition of fiber appears to block the absorption of some calories. Actually if you snacked on nuts or high fiber crackers that contain more fat you may actually lose slightly more weight than using the pretzels. Pretty small difference though. The extra fat and protein in peanut butter and crackers will also do a better job of satisfying your hunger compared to pretzels.

Protein Boosts Fat-Burning

November 21st, 2008

Study co-author Dr. Marijka Batterman, an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian, said: ‘We know from past research that overweight or obese people are not as efficient at burning fat. This new study shows that fat oxidation, or the body’s ability to ‘burn’ fat, improves in obese people when they eat a higher protein diet.’ -medicalnewstoday

MY COMMENT:  Another reason to take a good look at your protein intake.  Besides this research, we already know that protein is an effective appetite suppressant and takes a little extra energy to metabolize.
