Should You Cheat on the Weekend?

April 26th, 2010

I’ve always been an advocate of a cheat day, or as one of my new clients calls it, “treat” day, with the recommendation that you also make it your long exercise day.

Never assume.  After reading Weekend calories may wreck your diet, I’ll  make sure people understand the treat period can’t begin with Friday happy hour and end Sunday evening.

Let’s call it “controlled” cheating so that you don’t undo the entire week.

New Study Finds Calories More Important Than Exercise

May 9th, 2009

Cheeseburger and Fries for Lunch“To return to the average weights of the 1970s, we would need to reverse the increased food intake of about 350 calories a day for children (about one can of fizzy drink and a small portion of French fries) and 500 calories a day for adults (about one large hamburger),” -ScienceDaily

MY COMMENT: It’s clear we are eating and drinking more calories than we did in the 70s. We are also not getting as much exercise, however the role of diet is probably more important- and the key to successful weight loss is a modest reduction in calories resulting in slow, steady weight loss. But do not underestimate the importance physical activity has on long-term weight maintenance.

Are All Calories Created Equal?

March 27th, 2009

Research indicates that not all calories are created equal. It take more energy to metabolize calories from protein vs carbohydrate. Also, the addition of fiber appears to block the absorption of some calories. Actually if you snacked on nuts or high fiber crackers that contain more fat you may actually lose slightly more weight than using the pretzels. Pretty small difference though. The extra fat and protein in peanut butter and crackers will also do a better job of satisfying your hunger compared to pretzels.

Eat More Weigh Less

February 20th, 2009

Surprisingly, the component of foods that has the biggest impact on how much food you eat is water. Water adds weight and volume to foods without adding calories — it lowers the calorie density of foods. Water-rich foods include vegetables, fruits and soups. -msnbc.com

MY COMMENT: Barbara Rolls, Ph. D. has been studying this for years.

Changes in the Muscle May Be the Secret to Successful Weight Loss

December 7th, 2008

Years ago as a graduate student at the Ball State University Human Performance Laboratory, I participated in a study that compared muscle fibers of trained marathoners to sedentary controls.  On average, our muscle enzymes were 7 times more active than non runners.  Needless to say, our group of runners had little body fat and pretty much ate whatever we wanted without weight gain.

If you are one of those who are obsessed with digital readouts that display how many calories you burn, you are missing the whole point of exercise.  You eat those calories back in a matter of minutes.  I believe the real benefit of exercise takes place deep inside the muscle.

Endurance trained muscles are better at burning fat, and that may be the key to successful weight loss and long-term maintenance that so many people who struggle are missing.
