MUFAs and Belly Fat
February 23rd, 2009
Perhaps you’ve heard of MUFUs (monounsaturated fats). Supposedly there is some evidence that this type of fat can reduce belly fat (hence the Belly Fat Diet). My only problem with this is that people are being led to believe that all they need to do is start eat avocados, olives, and nuts and before long belly fat begins to melt away. Don’t you wish?

Dave-
You are totally correct in your MUFA skepticism. You have to watch your calorie totals in order to be successful and you have to avoid emotional eating. If you just eat MUFA’s without the total calories, you won’t lose weight. You might alter your fat distribution throughout the body, but I have not found studies supporting that. I think the benefit of MUFA’s in the diet is removing the deprival emotion from the diet. You feel full and satisfied from nuts and avocados. Yet, they are calorie rich foods and easy to eat too many.
Good thoughts.
Scott.
