Is This a Healthy Routine?

July 22nd, 2009

Woman in sportschoolI have recently gotten back into my health kick. I started off counting calories, and then realized I just wasn’t getting enough exorcise. I just joined a gym–my plan is to work out 5 days a week as my schedule permits. Monday-Wednesday I do 18 mins of cardio. Monday, I work out Legs and Abs. Tuesday, I work out Abs and back. Wednesday, my plan is to work out shoulders, chest, bi’s and tri’s. I spend about 1hr 45mins-2hrs in the gym -yahoo Answers
MY COMMENT: I am just curious- you do 18 minutes of cardio and spend up to 2 hours at the gym- the rest of your time is devoted to weights? Sounds to me like way too much time is being wasted.

I would flip that around and spend about 18 minutes on a focused weight program and the remainder doing various cardio routines. Diet sounds ok. My goal would be to get in and out of the gym in 60 minutes on most days.

Is there a fat burning zone?

July 20th, 2009

I’m confused of whether it is exercise/ do cardio in you “fat burning zone” to burn actual body fat -or- do it in your “anerobic zone” to burn more calories. My goal is to lose body FAT not really weight. I wouldn’t mind losing a few pounds :) but really I want to lose body fat. So WHICH ZONE should I do my cardio in? Thank you!! :) -Yahoo answers

MY COMMENT: The fat burning zone is a myth- go slow you burn more fat but fewer total calories. Ideally you want to do a mixture of low, moderate, and high intensity exercise. You burn more fat and calories doing very high intensity workouts (i.e. spinning), however it’s difficult to maintain that level day after day, so you do moderate activity most of the time. Go long (60 minutes or longer) one day a week to increase fat burning activity within your muscles, and hard once or twice. And don’t forget the diet side of the equation! Oh yea, strength training also helps maintain muscle during fat loss!

What Diet Really Works?

March 21st, 2009

You’ll lose weight on just about any diet that is lower in calories, however the key is what diet takes weight off PERMANENTLY?

1. Physical activity- You can lose weight without exercise, but are much more likely to keep it off if you exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

2. Weigh yourself often- once a week is best. It will keep you in touch with gradual weight regain so you can catch it early and get back on track.

3. Eat a healthy breakfast.

4. Follow the rest of the Lose It For Ever Scorecard.
