Food, Inc.

June 13th, 2009

In “Food, Inc.,” filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.

This film is now showing in select theaters. Go here for info.

How do you make a hot dog?

May 23rd, 2009

“First you slaughter the animals and cut out all the good parts, the steaks and chops. But you’ve got a lot of animal left and what are you going to do with it? The hot dog industry took off when a clever guy invented a machine that works like a kitchen disposal — you dump everything in, eyeballs and all, and grind it up. Voila, the hot dog.” -Dr. William Castelli, Framingham Heart Study NY Times

What Americans Really Want- More Fat!

May 17th, 2009

Good article here on America’s demand for bigger, fatter burgers.

“What people say they want and what they do don’t match up,” says Darren Tristano, an executive vice president at Technomic, a food-industry research and consulting firm. “If they say, ‘I’m gonna order more salads,’ they’re going to order more french fries.”

Wendy’s spokesman Denny Lynch says research shows that customers had an unslakable yearning for more bacon. “Well, if they like two strips of bacon, would they like three? And if they like three, how about six? And that’s where the Baconator came from,” he says

note: The Baconator has 1,920 mg of sodium, 830 calories, and 51 grams of fat.

Milk and Childhood Obesity-What’s the Relationship?

May 17th, 2009

Boy Drinking MilkGreater milk consumption was only linked to weight gain when it was part of a higher-calorie diet. The results suggest that milk was often consumed on top of other calorie-containing drinks rather than instead of them.

In another study among children aged 6 to 13, drinking more than 12 ounces of sweetened beverages each day was linked to about a six-ounce drop in milk consumption. Despite the drop in the amount of protein, calcium and other nutrients the children experienced, their overall calorie intake increased.

Researchers following 9 year old girls for 10 years discovered a 25% drop in milk consumption and a 3x increase in sugar-sweetened beverages.

MY COMMENT: Clearly it’s much easier to drink more soda than milk, and you can only guess the negative consequences on long term health. You can’t blame childhood obesity on milk.
