“Muscle loss is a serious issue that can lead to severe health and lifestyle consequences, yet building and maintaining muscle isn’t top of mind for most adults,”    -Evelyn Granieri, M.D., M.P.H., MSEd, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (Despite Risks, Americans Are Not Taking Action To Protect Themselves Against Muscle Loss As They Age)

Forget fat loss for just a minute- how many adults actually spend time working their muscles?  “…starting at age 40, the body can lose eight percent of muscle per decade”.

This is easily preventable by spending just a few minutes per day with bands, dumbbells, and body weight exercises like push-ups.   How many can you do?

Formerly Obese Mom Becomes a Runner

April 15th, 2010

Two years ago, West Jordan resident Stacy Ulch looked in her closet and saw nothing but rows of gray and black clothing, all meant to disguise weight gained over the course of four pregnancies and 18 years.

A once-lithe 135 pounds, Ulch saw her weight steadily increase until it plateaued at 270 pounds in 2008.  -Salt Lake Tribune

MY COMMENT: Great story.

Influence of Brisk Walking on Appetite, Energy Intake, and Plasma Acylated Ghrelin

February 21st, 2010

This study demonstrates that, despite inducing a moderate energy deficit, an acute bout of subjectively paced brisk walking does not elicit compensatory responses in acylated ghrelin, appetite, or energy intake. This finding lends support for a role of brisk walking in weight management.  -Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise

Subjects who walked briskly for an hour, burning just under 500 net calories (total-BMR) did not compensate by eating more.  Appetite was not affected.   This study contradicts the theory proposed in the recent Time magazine feature Why Exercise Won’ t Make You Thin.

Arthritis Not a Reason to Avoid Exercise

January 4th, 2010

British Indoor Rowing Championships

When a person avoids exercise, joints become less mobile and the surrounding muscles shrink, causing increased fatigue and pain.  -

People with arthritis who exercise report less pain.

MY COMMENT:   You might have to refrain from weight bearing activities however cycling,  swimming, rowing, skiing, or elliptical are excellent options.

Forget Willpower-

Man pushing lawn mower“One man said he didn’t like mowing the lawn, and he didn’t have to do it when he was heavy.” -webmd

MY COMMENT: No doubt if I had to carry around 100 extra pounds I wouldn’t want to cut the grass either- then again I’ve run 50 marathons and they weren’t easy either. Sometimes you have to learn how to deal with discomfort in order to achieve success.

Cutting grass does count as a workout!

30 Minutes a Day is the Minimum!

October 1st, 2009

Despite 14 years of public education campaigns, only one-third of Americans know about national recommendations for a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day, and fewer than half meet that goal, a new study has found. -everydayhealth

MY COMMENT: For effective weight loss and maintenance, it’s more like 60 minutes, however that depends on your level of intensity. Don’t forget, you can also “accumulate” minutes throughout the day.
