Mulit-Vitamins Linked to Weight Loss!!!

February 26th, 2010

Results of a 26-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study with 87 women found that multivitamins and minerals were associated with significantly lower body weight, body mass index, and fat mass  -nutraingredients.com

MY COMMENT:  Wouldn’t it be nice if this turns out to actually be true? Don’t ever forget, however, that a healthy diet and regular exercise will never be replaced.

Insanity!

February 26th, 2010

Hart embarked on a program of physical betterment over the off-season. Wanting to drop some pounds after his weight crept up to a career-high 246, thanks mostly to being idle in August, he saw a television ad for the “Insanity” workout program and immediately went online to order it.

By the time Hart reported to spring training, he was down 22 pounds.

“It kills you so you almost have to drink water,” he said. “I didn’t want to die during my workout. It was terrible.

MY COMMENT:  Sound a little like Rocky!  Hopefully it pays off for Hart this season.

MY COMMENT:  I don’t watch the show but let me guess that the exercise gets a wee bit over dramatized?   I’ll assume these people are  medically cleared?

Influence of Brisk Walking on Appetite, Energy Intake, and Plasma Acylated Ghrelin

February 21st, 2010

This study demonstrates that, despite inducing a moderate energy deficit, an acute bout of subjectively paced brisk walking does not elicit compensatory responses in acylated ghrelin, appetite, or energy intake. This finding lends support for a role of brisk walking in weight management.  -Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise

Subjects who walked briskly for an hour, burning just under 500 net calories (total-BMR) did not compensate by eating more.  Appetite was not affected.   This study contradicts the theory proposed in the recent Time magazine feature Why Exercise Won’ t Make You Thin.

Super Donuts!

February 15th, 2010

Stack of Chocolate Donuts

Remember Franco Harris?  Franco is a Hall of Fame running back who spent most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It seems Franco is also a good business man.   He founded and owns RSuper Foods, a company that offers “healthy junk food.”

For example, The Super Donut has 180 calories, 5 grams of fat and is cooked with canola oil, therefore holds only 1 gram of saturated fat.  It also has 5 gm of protein (by comparison a Dunkin Donut glazed donut has 220 calories, 9 gram of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat,  and 1 gram of fiber).
