“These competitive eaters are an interesting group of people who seem to have abilities that many people in the normal population don’t have,” David Metz, a gastroenterologist at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia
“…studying competitive eating could help researchers understand the mechanisms of swallowing and triggers for “fullness”, and why they don’t seem to work properly in some people” -sciencedaily.com
MY COMMENT: Just another example of how some humans can train their body and mind to do things far beyond the norm. The spectrum is amazing! Compare the guy who can run 26.2 miles at 4:50 min per mile to some who can’t walk around the block.
Joey Chestnut holds the world record- an astounding 68 hot dogs in just 10 minutes! That’s what I call a mega-binge!

Alley, who lost 75 pounds following Jenny Craig, gained all of that weight back and then some. Now she is starring in a reality TV show as she attempts to lose it again. Talk about pressure!
Kirstie Alley
She’s also got another angle up her sleeve - if you go to her website (http://kirstiealley.com) you’ll get the opportunity for a 10% discount on your inital purchase. No mention of what you might be buying, but I suspect some super secret weight loss gimmick.
What am I doing even looking into this nonsense?

Think you’re going to lose fat faster by exercising?
Conclusions: Despite similar effect on fat losses, combining CR (calorie restriction) with exercise increased aerobic fitness in parallel with improved insulin sensitivity, LDL cholesterol, and diastolic BP. The results lend support for inclusion of an exercise component in weight loss programs to improve metabolic fitness. -Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise
COMMENTS: This study split subjects into 3s- controls, a group that reduced calorie intake by 25%, and a combination group with 12.5% reduction in calories combined with a 12.5% increase in physical activity. The findings support previous research- you don’t accelerate fat loss by adding exercise when caloric deficits are the same, however the added benefits are significant. Other research has found that weight loss is more likely to be maintained in those who continue to exercise.

Obviously (or maybe not) you eat more calories and not-so-healthy choices when you eat out. So why not make your own lunch?
Researchers in Minnesota created an interesting study to test this idea. They recruited 19 women who agreed to eat a prepackaged boxed lunch each day at work for two months. The women were given either a small lunch of 767 calories or a large lunch of 1,528 calories (double the size) and were told to eat as much or as little as they wanted. Data analysis at the end of the study showed that the women who had the larger lunch ate 278 calories more each day

There are currently more than five thousand members of the National Weight Control Registry, all of whom have lost significant amounts of weight and kept it off. These members lost the weight in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons. Some have lost 30 pounds, some 130 pounds. Some have kept the weight off for one year, some for decades. What they all have in common, though, is a commitment to successful weight loss maintenance. These are the success stories of just a few of our many participants. -national weight control registry
MY COMMENT: These people are to be commended for what they’ve been able to accomplish. If you need to lose more than 30 pounds, I’d be looking closely at everything they did to lose weight and how they’ve been able to maintain their success.

You first have to convert your weight in
pounds into weight in kilograms. You do this
by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2.
For a person who is 135 pounds this would
be 135/2.2=61.4 kilograms
Then take your height in inches and convert
it to centimeters. A 5’5’’ person would
be 65 inches. Multiply the inches by 2.54.
So the 5’5” person would be 65 x 2.54=165
centimeters (rounded).
Estimated Daily Resting Energy Expenditure formula for males:
BMR=66+ (13.7 x kg) + (5.0 x cm) – (6.8 x age)
Estimated Daily Resting Energy Expenditure formula for females:
BMR= 655 + (9.6 x kg) + (1.85 x cm) – (4.7 x age)
EXAMPLE: female, 30 yrs old, 5′5″, 135 lbs
655 + (9.6 x 61.4) + (1.85 x 165) – 4.7 x 30)
655 + 305 – 141
BMR estimate = 1101 calories
Remmber, this is energy expenditure at rest, not your caloric daily need. You have to add in an estimate for how many calories you burn daily in order to get that number.
