Approximately 7.7 food commercials per hour appeared in programming on the children’s networks, which is approximately 1 food commercial every 8 minutes.

Eighty percent of MTV food commercials were for fast food restaurants, sugar-added beverages, and sweets -nutritionnews.com

MY COMMENT: Everybody knows about this but what can be done? Get your kids outside, limit tv time, and refuse to buy unhealthy foods.

Are You Desperate Enough to Try Vinegar?

November 27th, 2009
Glass of Water Next to Cooking Oil and Vinegar

Researchers found that the mice developed a lot less body fat (up to 10% less) than mice who didn’t receive the vinegar compound. The amount of food eaten by the mice was not affected.

It’s believed that acetic acid turns on genes that produce proteins that help the body break down fats. Such an action helps prevent fat buildup in body, and thwarts weight gain. -webmd.com

MY COMMENT: I wouldn’t mess with it except for perhaps salad dressing.

from examiner.com: Vinegar is acidic. Apple cider vinegar should be diluted in water or some other liquid before being ingested. The acid in vinegar could erode the enamel of your teeth.

Long term use of vinegar could lower potassium levels, which could be problematic for some patients.

Vinegar contains chromium which can alter insulin levels in diabetics.

Vitamin C Deficiency Decreases Fat Oxidation During Exerise

November 21st, 2009

These preliminary results show that low vitamin C status is associated with reduced fat oxidation during submaximal exercise. Low vitamin C status may partially explain the inverse relationship between vitamin C status and adiposity and why some individuals are unsuccessful in their weight loss attempts. -nutritionandmetabolism

MY COMMENT: Vitamin C is cheap and readily available. It would be worth a try to at least take a 500mg supplement daily. Interesting to note “an inverse relationship between vitamin C status and body weight and waist measurements . Also that it was a supplement and not real food that effectively corrected the deficiency and improved fat metabolism.

This does not mean Vitamin C is a weight loss pill- only that it may help you burn fat if your diet is dificient.

Group of friends at dinner party According to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), eating a meal quickly, as compared to slowly, curtails the release of hormones in the gut that induce feelings of being full. The decreased release of these hormones, can often lead to overeating. -sciencedaily.com

MY COMMENT: See if you can’t be the last one finshed at the dinner table. Put the fork down between bites, and thoroughly chew your food.
