The group (American Heart Association) said women should eat no more than 100 calories of added processed sugar per day, or six teaspoons (25 grams), while most men should keep it to just 150 calories or nine teaspoons (37.5 grams).
That’s far below the 22 teaspoons (90 grams) or 355 calories of added sugar consumed by the average American each day, according to a 2004 government survey.
MY COMMENT: The 150 calories is about the same as a12 ounce Coke. Last time I checked we were averaging more than 50 gallons of soft drink consumption per person per year in the US. There are millions of overweight and obese out there who could lose significant weight just by eliminating soda.
In a FDA news release today, the administration announced that it is investigating the reports of liver damage in several people who have taken the only FDA approved weight loss OTC drug alli. The FDA stated that it has received 32 reports of liver damage from alli between 1999 and 2008.
Several of those with liver damage have received serious injuries to the liver because of the drug orlistat, or alli. -emaxhealth.com
MY COMMENT: To me, the modest success from using alli is not worth the risk.
“Pursuing weight loss is an immensely daunting project fraught with many troubles, whether psychological, social, or physical. To overcome these challenges, consumers turn to Weight Watchers.” -sciencedaily.com
MY COMMENT: Weight Watchers has 1.5 million members worldwide so they must be on to something. For me, running also has a spiritual component.
“Agreement is growing that the source of the obesity epidemic lies in an environment that produces an energy gap, where energy intake exceeds energy expenditure even by as little as 100 excess calories per day,” wrote Clarke and co-authors Patrick O’Malley, Lloyd Johnston, John Schulenberg and Paula Lantz, all researchers at ISR. -Medical News Today
MY COMMENT: A pound of fat is the equivelant of approx. 3,500 calories. Over a year (365 days), 100 extra calories a day, either through eating more or exercising less, might add up to a 10 pound gain. A hundred calories a day isn’t much, but over 5-10 years the difference will be significant. See what you are eating or drinking that you don’t reallly need (soda, energy drinks, bacon, etc.) and take an extra walk during the day.
The 5 Factor Diet looks like another best seller with testimonials from a handful of celebs, including Jessica Simpson who lost 10 pounds in 10 just days! Hats off to author Harley Pasternak who clearly has made a killing in the weight loss industry.
I haven’t read the book- it probably does contain helpful information. I just don’t like the hype. 5factordiet.com Any program or weight loss book that claims a 10 pound weight loss in 10 days has no credibility.
“I tried to eat a lot more lean things,” Raji said. “Just watched what I ate. I made sure it didn’t get out of control. I really wasn’t doing much besides working out.” -B.J. Raji, who just signed a 5 year 28.5 million dollar contract with Green Bay Packers.
On workouts prior to signing, “I tried to go four or five days a week. I was running some gassers and some striders on the track. Laps. Technique things” -JSOnline
MY COMMENT: Hire a dietitican, get your butt in gear, and earn your money.
“In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless” -Eric Ravussin, chair in diabetes and metabolism at Louisiana State University
Facinating article in Time Magazine called Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin that protrays exercise as a villian in the weight loss struggle. What’s the real story?
FACT: It’s true that exercise does not speed up weight loss. In my book, Lose It For Ever, I cite research that supports this fact.
FACT: Most people trying to lose weight cannot do so using exercise by itself without a change in diet.
FACT: It is extremely difficult to compensate for a high calorie diet with physical activity.
FACT: If you looked at a breakdown of weight that is successfully lost in comparison studies, exercisers lose more fat and less muscle compared to those who just diet.
FACT: While exercise does not speed up the weight loss process, those who practice it regularly have a much higher probability of keeping it off compared to dieters.
FACT: It’s much easier reduce calorie intake by 300 than it is to burn 300 calories through activity.
FACT: It’s a no-brainer that exercise provides more health benefits than you could possibly derive from anything else modern medicine can provide. That should be reason enough.
MY THEORY: There is more to weight loss than reducing “the energy gap”. I believe the real value of exercise and successful weight loss results from changes within the body that improve your ability to convert food into energy. Diet doesn’t do that. I also am convinced that the optimal weight loss/weight maintenance program requires a balance of activity and sensible eating.
Today I weighed 211, so I’ve lost 79 pounds. I’ve lost seven pounds since Saturday. Yeah, I’m still trying to lose. My original goal was 210, but I’m going to keep going, there’s no reason to stop. I’m going to see what happens at 200, see what happens there. I may keep going. I mean I love this diet. The food is delicious. And, by the way, you know what? There’s one way for me to tell you how I’m doing this because I can’t describe it. I told you, I cannot describe it. It’s too intricate, too detailed. I couldn’t do it. -rushlimbaugh.com
MY COMMENT: When any celebrity loses weight, it’s big news. How did they do it? Rush admits the secret to his success is Quick Weight Loss Centers.
I have to be suspect of any program or diet that uses the word “quick” and claims you can lose 3-7 pounds a week.
Most people need between 20 and 35 grams of fiber each day -Everyday Health
MY COMMENT: Eating 25 grams of fiber a day won’t leave much room for nutrient deficident high calorie junk. I’d include nuts as a healthy additional source of fiber.
