A consumer activist group sued Denny’s Corp on Thursday, saying the restaurant chain’s menus should disclose the “dangerously high” levels of sodium in its meals.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest said most Americans should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium each day, but some meals at Denny’s contain more than 5,000 milligrams -Nutrition News and Information

Though Kirstie says she still hasn’t gotten back on the exercise equipment, she has begun the weight loss journey. “For the last year and a half, I’ve been researching and developing my own weight loss line, and I’ve actually lost 20 pounds in the last five weeks doing that,” she says.
Kirstie says she can’t reveal anything just yet, but she’s convinced she’s cracked the weight loss code. “It’s not going to be on the market until probably between November and January 1, probably November,” -oprah.com
I just happened to catch part of Oprah’s interview with Kirstie Alley-what a piece of work. I can’t wait to see what she has dreamed up!

Check out squeezeitin.com for ideas on adding different exercises to tasks of daily living. Can you get fit this way? I doubt it, but something is better than nothing.
I perfer buying a selection of exercise equipment including dumbbells, Exer-tubing, fitness ball, push up handles, pull-up bar (the kind that hangs in a doorway), and the Lebert Equalizer Bars, piling everything in a corner, then pick something out to work on every day.
I hate to say it, but if you want muscle tone you have to fatigue that specific group to near failure repeatedly. Sorry, but I just can’t see that happening while doing laundry or dishes. You will see results, however in just minutes a day with heavy enough dumbbells, Ex-tube upper and lower body work, push-ups, e.t.c. done first thing in the morning, during tv commercials, before bed, or whenever you can fit it in.

I have recently gotten back into my health kick. I started off counting calories, and then realized I just wasn’t getting enough exorcise. I just joined a gym–my plan is to work out 5 days a week as my schedule permits. Monday-Wednesday I do 18 mins of cardio. Monday, I work out Legs and Abs. Tuesday, I work out Abs and back. Wednesday, my plan is to work out shoulders, chest, bi’s and tri’s. I spend about 1hr 45mins-2hrs in the gym -yahoo Answers
MY COMMENT: I am just curious- you do 18 minutes of cardio and spend up to 2 hours at the gym- the rest of your time is devoted to weights? Sounds to me like way too much time is being wasted.
I would flip that around and spend about 18 minutes on a focused weight program and the remainder doing various cardio routines. Diet sounds ok. My goal would be to get in and out of the gym in 60 minutes on most days.

I’m confused of whether it is exercise/ do cardio in you “fat burning zone” to burn actual body fat -or- do it in your “anerobic zone” to burn more calories. My goal is to lose body FAT not really weight. I wouldn’t mind losing a few pounds
but really I want to lose body fat. So WHICH ZONE should I do my cardio in? Thank you!!
-Yahoo answers
MY COMMENT: The fat burning zone is a myth- go slow you burn more fat but fewer total calories. Ideally you want to do a mixture of low, moderate, and high intensity exercise. You burn more fat and calories doing very high intensity workouts (i.e. spinning), however it’s difficult to maintain that level day after day, so you do moderate activity most of the time. Go long (60 minutes or longer) one day a week to increase fat burning activity within your muscles, and hard once or twice. And don’t forget the diet side of the equation! Oh yea, strength training also helps maintain muscle during fat loss!

Generally speaking, jogging burns approximately double the amount of calories as walking the same distance. Here is a simple way to gradually introduce jogging into your walking program.

Week 2…walk 5 min, then jog 1 min, walk 30 sec. Repeat 10 x.
Week 3…walk 5 min, then jog 2 min, walk 30 sec. Repeat 5 x.

Week 5…walk 5 min, then jog 4 min, walk 1 min. Repeat 3 x.
Week 6…walk 5 min, then jog 4 min, walk 1 min. Repeat 5 x.
Week 7…walk 5 min, then jog 6 min, walk 2 min. Repeat 3-4 x.
Week 8…walk 5 min, then jog 10 min, walk 2 min, Repeat 2 x.
Week 9…walk 5 min, then jog 15 min, walk 2 min, jog 5 min.

Long-term regular consumption of a multivitamin may reduce the risk of dying from heart disease by 16 per cent, according to a new study from the US. -nutraingredients.com
Intakes of vitamin E over 215 milligrams per day over the course of ten years were also associated with a 28 per cent reduction in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, according to findings published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
MY COMMENT: These findings contradict earlier studies that found no benefit. Stay tuned! For your information, I take the Lifepak Nano by Pharmanex- expensive but I am confident worth every penny. I’ve seen what they do for my Skin Carotenoid Score (increased from 36,000 to as high as 70,000 plus!)

Excess weight was significantly associated with an increased risk of rapid cartilage loss. For a one-unit increase in BMI, the odds of rapid cartilage loss increased by 11 percent -sciencedaily.com
MY COMMENT: Another reason to lose. I’ve always contended that carrying extra weight leads to more joint problems than exercise. Still, I consider myself extremely fortunate- in my younger days I ran years and years of 70 plus miles a week on pavement. At 55, I still average 50 miles a week and have had no symptoms of joint pain (knock on wood).

Researchers at Georgia State University have found that diets high in fructose — a type of sugar found in most processed foods and beverages — impaired the spatial memory of adult rats. -sciencedaily.com
The proposed mechanism? Fructose, unlike another sugar, glucose, is processed almost solely by the liver, and produces an excessive amount of triglycerides — fat which get into the bloodstream. Triglycerides can interfere with insulin signaling in the brain, which plays a major role in brain cell survival and plasticity, or the ability for the brain to change based on new experiences
MY COMMENT: Our diet is high in high fructose corn syrup- although not near the levels fed these rats. I found it interesting that researchers intend to follow up by seeing if exercise or fish oil offer any protection from memory impairment caused by fructose. I hope so.
