MY COMMENT: One of the easiest ways to improve your diet is to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables. If you are not averaging 2 fruits and 3 vegetable servings per day, ask yourself why not? It’s not that hard.

You Could Have Had a V-8: and lost a few pounds

April 23rd, 2009

adults who drank at least 8 ounces of vegetable juice as part of a calorie-controlled heart-healthy diet lost 4 pounds over 12 weeks, while those who followed the same diet but did not drink the veggie juice lost only 1 pound -yahoo health

MY COMMENT: 4 pounds in 12 weeks? These subjects were supposed to be following the DASH Diet- I am curious how much cheating was going on. Unless you have absolutely no blood pressure problems, I’d choose the low sodium version. And don’t get the idea that all you need to do is drink a can of juice at breakfast and the pounds will melt away. 470_132868

How Much Water Should You Drink?

April 18th, 2009

image_previewThe Beverage Guidance Panel recommends 20-50 ounces per day.

Those who advocate drinking up to a gallon a day should think twice about dispensing that advice (see how drinking too much water can be potentially very dangerous!).

Another problem with drinking too much water – your body responds by shutting down production of vasopressin, a hormone that signals the kidneys to preserve water.

Including Healthy Options on the Menu May Not be Working

April 15th, 2009

In one study, college students were given one of two menus. One menu featured French fries, chicken nuggets and a baked potato; the other included those same items as well as a salad. The French fries, widely perceived as the least healthful option, were three times as popular with students selecting from the menu that had the salad as they were with the other group. -NY Times

MY COMMENT: Ok, let me get this straight- students that select food items perceived as healthy feel justifed to also eat more less healthy foods?
