Are All Calories Created Equal?

March 27th, 2009

Research indicates that not all calories are created equal. It take more energy to metabolize calories from protein vs carbohydrate. Also, the addition of fiber appears to block the absorption of some calories. Actually if you snacked on nuts or high fiber crackers that contain more fat you may actually lose slightly more weight than using the pretzels. Pretty small difference though. The extra fat and protein in peanut butter and crackers will also do a better job of satisfying your hunger compared to pretzels.

Can eating certain foods impact your metabolism?

March 27th, 2009

Drinks or food with caffeine can pick things up a bit. So can the thermal effect of digesting protein, but overall impact is not going to be that significant, at least in the short term. Exercise does a far better job stimulating metabolism and burning calories.

Too Much Red Meat Found to Decrease Life Expectancy

March 24th, 2009

Over 10 years, eating the equivalent of a quarter-pound hamburger daily gave men in the study a 22 percent higher risk of dying of cancer and a 27 percent higher risk of dying of heart disease. That’s compared to those who ate the least red meat, just 5 ounces per week

Women who ate large amounts of red meat had a 20 percent higher risk of dying of cancer and a 50 percent higher risk of dying of heart disease than women who ate less. -yahoo

MY COMMENT: This confirms what we already know- a diet high in red meat increases health risks. Eat more fish!
